Alphonse Elric and Edward Elric had several tragedies happen to them at an early age. First their dad left them. Because of that, their mom was miserable and she died of a deadly illness. They decided to bring her back with alchemy. They knew that human alchemy was a taboo that must not be violated so in return for trying, not only did they not get their mom back, Al lost his body and Ed lost a leg. In order to save Al, Ed transmuted Al's soul into a suit of armor but in the process, lost an arm. His mother's friend, Pinako Rockbell, gave Ed automail, automated parts that take the parts of limbs. 

In order to obtain information about the Philostopher's Stone, Ed joined the military to become the dog. Ed and Al now travel the world working for the military and searching for the Philostopher's stone in order to get their original bodies back but many others also seek the stone and the way is fraught with dangers...
